A work from The Void series, this piece was created in Caley’s Gowanus studio in 2025. Rooted in ideas of liminality and transition, the painting features a vibrant palette and incorporates various floral elements embedded directly into the surface. A red square at the bottom left represents a door that has already been walked through and closed, while a white square above it signals a door not yet entered, one whose other side remains unknown. The recurring motif of stars suggests a sense of drifting, evoking the vastness and disorientation of the void that exists between departure and arrival. ABOUT THE SERIES
The Void centers on the idea of existing in the in-between moments that emerge between chapters of life. The paintings reflect the experience of knowing that a certain era has closed, while what comes next has not yet revealed itself. There is a quiet discomfort in this state, a feeling of being caught between what was and what will be, yet also an understanding that this pause is part of a larger passage. The work treats this space not as emptiness, but as a necessary interval, where transition is felt before it is understood. The paintings are built through a restrained, concentrated palette and carefully controlled compositions that emphasize emptiness, distance, and spatial ambiguity. Large areas of open space create a sense of pause, while subtle shifts in color and texture guide the eye without offering resolution. The geometric forms of doorways serve as markers of transition rather than destinations. The recurring rectangular motif of a doorway filled with white light signals the next chapter, a threshold that will eventually be crossed but remains just out of reach. In contrast, filled-in square often appears as a closed door, marking the space just exited. In some of these pieces, strips of paper bearing handwriting and/or flowers are embedded into the work, carrying personal questions, fragments of thought, and lived moments drawn directly from time spent inhabiting the same in-between space depicted on the canvas.
More Info
Please note that these works are intentionally imperfect. Visible marks, layered textures, and embedded materials are integral to each painting and are not considered flaws or defects. Elements such as dust, fibers, and evidence of revision are purposefully left in the surface as records of the work’s making over time. Rather than aiming for a polished or pristine finish, these paintings embrace messiness, transformation, and human touch as essential parts of their meaning. Each piece reflects a process of evolution rather than refinement, and should be understood as complete in its irregularity. Each artwork comes with an official packet containing: Certificate of Authenticity, business card, postcard, and bio sheet.
